Welcome to Mom Teacher Geek!!!

I had so much fun when I started this blog.  We came up with the name Engineering Summer as a family.  We all worked together to come up with ideas and do fun things.  We had fun making play-doh and sharing our Legoland adventure.  Then I had a problem which was inevitable, but I think I was in denial about it.  Summer ENDED.  All of a sudden the kids were back in school and Engineering Summer didn’t sound right anymore.

So I started to think how I could change it.  I wanted something that incorporated so much more though.  My daughter was doing some really cute things in school that I wanted to share.  I was finding deals that I knew those who read this blog would love.  I was learning so much while in school for my teaching certificate.  The 2nd grade teacher I assist did the COOLEST halloween science experiements and I didn’t feel I had a place to share them.  ”Engineering Summer” I thought would seem weird with a post about Halloween.

So I changed it!  Yay!  Welcome to Mom Teacher Geek.  That definitely explains me in 3 words.  And I am ready to share so much more than I have before.  So join me!  Subscribe to my RSS feed, friend me on Facebook and/or follow me on Pinterest!  You can find this site by visiting www.momteachergeek.com.  You can, however, still also access it via www.EngineeringSummer.com.  Whichever you prefer!

Bittersweet Space Day

Today my son finally experienced the first day of his big 8th grade graduation gift.  He’s known about this day for months and the anticipation was killing all of us!!  Today was Jonah’s first day at Space Camp at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  I wanted to wait and share when the week was over.  I wanted to give you all the special details at once.  Then an alert popped up on my Ipad.  It read, “Sally Ride First Woman in Space Dies at 61″

NASA official portrait of female astronaut Sally Ride.

When I read the alert a million memories rushed to my head.  I remembered this beautiful dark haired woman with a smile as big as her sense of adventure.  I remembered seeing her wave as a part of the astronaut crew on the nightly news.  I remembered thinking, “See, I could go to space if I wanted.”  And I wondered if little girls today who dream of flying into space will know the woman who paved the way for them.  Even when I mentioned the news to my family I am sorry to admit my kids were not too sure who I was talking about.

Jonah had a great first day of camp.  He is building a rocket which he is thrilled about.  When we picked him up he had a huge smile that I have not seen in a long time.  When he started telling us about his day he said, “and all the other kids knew what I was talking about!”  Often he will try to talk about the things that interest him with friends and their eyes gloss over.  They don’t know or understand what the heck he is talking about.  He tells everyone he wants to be a Cosmologist.  99% react with a tilted head and a funny look and say, “I didn’t think you were interested in hair or makeup”.  Confusing, of course Cosmetology, the study of beauty applications with Cosmology, the study of the Universe.  Well today he met kids who not only know the difference, but want to be Cosmologists themselves.

It makes me think of Sally Ride.  The first woman into space.  Being the first means she didn’t have too many people she could talk to about her unique situation.  There were no women here she could go to and say, “how did you deal with  ??”.  She pioneered it.  And she did it with style, grace and a most beautiful smile.

Legoland Florida Water Park

Legos are a BIG part of our geeky life.  All of my kids love them and I think my son’s entire room is full of nothing but Legos.  We still have my husband’s big bag of Legos he grew up with.  One of our favorite family activities is to bring out Daddy’s old Legos, dump the bag in the middle of the living and have a family building party.

So of course we were over the moon when we learned Legoland was going to be right here in Florida!!  It has lived up to all of our expectations.  We LOVE to go there.  Recently Legoland Florida opened a new section of the park.  A Legoland Waterpark!!!  For our birthdays my husband’s parents upgraded our passes to include the waterpark.  We went today to celebrate our birthdays.

Joker Soaker

When we walked in there was a restaurant and store.  I also noticed big lockers and bathrooms right by the entrance.  I thought that was convenient!! Next to the restaurant was a large sandy area with lots of chairs and a big umbrella. The first two sections are the Duplo Splash Safari and the Build a Raft River.  There were also Cabanas available in this area.

Knowing we were going to the water park I knew my mission was a trip on a lazy river.  The Build a Raft River is such a fun twist on this classic water park feature.  The rafts have building plates.  There were many rafts to choose from.  There were double rafts, single rafts and rafts where the hole was filled in so if you have a little one they will not fall through.  As you enter the river there are bins and bins full of oversize Legos to build with.  There is a big umbrella there too so you can build in the shade if you’d like.  I preferred building in the water!   There were 3 entrances and lots of space so many people could build at one time.  There is also rafts without building plates and an entrance without Legos.  So if you don’t want to build you can just get in and go.  There were railings which I loved.  I am not the most graceful sort and the railings really helped!!  They also helped my daughter Aidan.  (For her story, click here.)

We loved the Build a Raft river!! It was relaxing and fun.  Not too long of a trip, but not too short either.  And plenty to look at.  As we were in the river my 5 year old was with my Mother in Law  in the Duplo Splash Safari.  She had so much fun there.  There was a zero depth entry, 2 very large simple slides, and fun Duplo animals that sprayed water.  Even though this is a toddler area, my 5 year old loved it.

The rest of the water park was just over a bridge.  Not a large bridge, but it definitely felt like a different area.  I would recommend spending time in the first area and then moving on to the second.  They did feel a little separate.  Over the bridge you will find the Joker Soaker and the Lego Wave Pool.

The Joker Soaker is of course great.  This area is also zero depth entry.  There are lots of bridges, slides, water cannons and of course a HUGE bucket that regularly dumps water everywhere (and I liked that the lifeguards whistle 3 times before the bucket dumps so you know it’s coming.)  Joker Soaker is colorful and good for hours of fun.  All 3 of my kids loved this area.  That is actually saying a lot because my 3 kids are 3 VERY different children.  My 14 year old loves to play and has a sense of adventure.  My 11 year old is cautious and careful and doesn’t like to be surprised.  My youngest is a mix of her older siblings.  She is adventurous, but on her own terms.  This area made all 3 very very happy.  You will also notice that the lifeguards whistle 3 times

Lego Wave Pool

My kids also loved the Lego Wave Pool.  It’s big and we felt like we were in our own little world.  The deepest point is only 6 feet.  My cautious girls liked that they could stand in most of the pool area.  The waves were on 10 minutes and off for 5.  There were also lots of seats and umbrellas between the wave pool and the Joker Soaker.  This is a great central area to set up a home base.  There are also very nice bathrooms in between these areas included family restrooms.  There were also changing rooms that looked clean and fresh.

Now I will admit I did not make it to the Twin Chasers or the Splash Out.  My son did though and he loved it.  He was thoroughly entertained on all of the slides.  But another area we spent time at on the way out didn’t have a name.  There were large Lego building areas with water, sprayers and fountains.  The kids LOVED it there and probably could have spent the entire afternoon in this area alone.  I would recommend not saving this for last.  You will never get the kids to leave if you end with it!!!

Here’s what I LOVED about the Legoland Waterpark.  I thought it was extraordinarily entertaining.  There seemed to be lots to do for both the adventurous and those who just want to relax.  I like the different sections.  They seem to help keep the park from feeling super crowded.  We didn’t go on a very busy day, but even if we did the different sections help a lot to break up the people.  I also loved the little Lego Men with the sun safety tips!!

There were also lifeguards EVERYWHERE!!  There seemed to be an over abundance of lifeguards which makes this safety crazy Mom happy.  And all the ones I talked to were so very friendly.  You could tell they were taking their job very seriously, but if you needed them they responded with a smile.  Definitely the best of the best.   There were also several life jackets in all sizes.  There were some in every area so you don’t have to carry one around all day unless you want to.  And I liked that there was one for my 11 year old who is a bit water fearful.  The sizes were clearly marked, but there were lifeguards happy to help you get the right fit.

Now here’s my caution!!!  If you have water shoes, wear them all day.  Make your kids wear them too.  The ground was REALLY hot when we were there.  It was uncomfortable walking from area to area with bare feet.  My Father In Law gave himself terrible blisters walking my Mother In Law over the bridge.  Bare feet pushing into the hot cement was not good.  There are cubbies in all the different areas for your flip flops if you choose.  But I still think the walk from the cubbies to the pools was uncomfortable.  I did notice on the way out of the water park that the store by the entrance sold Crocs.  So if you forget water shoes just remember you can pick something up right there in the park.

It’s definitely worth the extra money.  If you have an annual pass, the water park upgrade is currently on sale through the end of July.  Save $20!!  Haven’t been to Legoland Florida yet?  Burger King happy meal crowns currently have a coupon to get a free child ticket when an adult ticket is purchased.  I have also found similar coupons in boxes of Life Cereal (look for specially marked packages.)

Happy Force of July!!

Did you know it is the Force of July??  I am SO excited.  Let me tell you why.  SPIKE network is hosting a Force of July event.  For the next 6 nights SPIKE will be showing all 6 Star Wars Episodes in order.  Tonight it is Episode 1, The Phantom Menace.  With the millions of times we have seen these movies you can bet my whole family will be glued around the tube just to watch them one more time.

Well, SPIKE is also having a trivia contest during the event.  Grand Prize??  Tickets to Star Wars Celebration VI in Orlando, FL!!!

What is Star Wars Celebration?  It is the official Star Wars Convention.  My husband took my son and father in law to Star Wars Celebration V which was also in Orlando in 2010.  They had a great time!  There were so many people dressed in character.  It really was a once in a lifetime event for any Star Wars super fan!!

Well, I find myself a bit jealous.  I really wanted to go in 2010!!!  But our youngest was only 3 at the time and I just didn’t want to leave her.  I also thought the boys would really enjoy the time together.  But now I want to go.  Problem is, it costs money to go.  Money I don’t have.  So I am going to WIN!!!  First Prize:  A pair of 4 day tickets to Star Wars Celebration VI, a pair of tickets to “An Evening with Kevin Smith” (how cool would that be!!???), Star Wars the Complete Saga on Blu-Ray, Sideshow Collectibles “Return of the Jedi” Diorama, and a Star Wars Spike poster.

Now I know you are thinking, what’s the point if YOU are going to win?  Well, the second place prize will go to 4 winners.  And I must say I would love second place as well.  Prizes include:  Pair of 4 day tickets to Star Wars Celebration VI, Funko Star Wars headphones, a Lids Star Wars Cap, a Gentle Giant collectible Mini-Bust, and a Star Wars Spike poster.  There is even a 3rd prize for 20 winners:  Episode 1 “The Phantom Menace” Limited Edition 3-D Glasses and a Star Wars Spike Poster.

So watch the Force of July and Enter the contest HERE.  Good luck!! I hope we both win!!

Play Dough: The ultimate scientific fun mix!!

So we are in day 3 of Tropical Storm Debby.  She is bringing us a ton of rain!  I have been trapped at home due to the high water on the 2 streets in and out of our neighborhood.  Ahh, Florida waterfront living.  But I was able to get out today!  Yay!!  I was never so happy to go to Target.  I needed some groceries and I thought I would get what I needed for play dough.  I picked up some salt.  I also never used Cream of Tartar in play dough before.  So I picked up some of that as well.  AND it was on clearance!!  I was doing the happy dance for sure.

I was lucky enough today to have my niece and nephew over for a visit.  Play dough is definitely fuel for the imagination, and my niece and nephew LOVE to use their imagination.   They were very excited for us to make it!  I definitely made sure they were a big part of putting it all together.

So I looked through my old child care notes for the play dough recipe.   Here is what I used.

1 C Flour

1/2 C Salt

2 T oil

2 T Cream of Tartar

1 C boiling water

Food coloring

The kids helped mix all the dry ingredients.  Easy peasy!  Then we added the oil.  Finally the water.  I was worried about all of us having colored hands from the play dough.  I have certainly had that problem before!  And food coloring stains never seem to go away.  So what I decided to do was to add the food coloring to the boiling water.  And it seemed to work!!  The kids could see the color as we poured in the water.  It’s a great way to sneak in a color lesson as well.  You can show how mixing colors together can make a whole new color.

Once everything is added I started to mix.  I used a spatula so I could be sure to scrape all the flour off the bottom.  As you mix, it should form a dough pretty quickly.  Once it is coming together I sprinkled some flour on the table and dumped the mix on the flour.  I then sprinkled the top of the dough and kneaded 10 times.  I am not sure 10 times is set in stone.  I just liked the round number.

Now I made 3 batches.  I knew the kids would love the different colors.  But each batch produces quite a bit!  I was surprised how much there was. 2 batches came out perfect.  The last batch was a bit wet.  If that happens, no worries!!  Just add a little more flour to the kneading.  Once it starts to form a dough you are set.  The good thing is this is so cheap to make.  Of course my kids love to mix the colors which bugs me when I spend a bunch of money on it!  But since this was so affordable I was encouraging them to mix it!  And the kids loved seeing if the colors would change when the finished play dough was mixed.

Once everyone is done just pull out an airtight container and store your play dough in the fridge.  I am not sure how long it will last, but I will post when I think it is time to stop using it.

*UPDATE 7/05/2012*

The playdoh is still going strong!!  We store it in the fridge in a storage bag and pull it out when we want (which is quite a bit around here).
